The longsword is the knight's sword of the late medieval world — the hand-and-a-half blade that could be wielded in one hand from horseback or gripped with both for the powerful cuts and thrusts of the German and Italian fighting schools. Ours are hand-forged in high-carbon and Damascus steel to the historical proportions: straight double-edged blades, cruciform guards, and grips long enough for the second hand that gives the weapon its versatility.
Every longsword here is battle-ready — full tang, properly tempered, and balanced for actual handling, whether that means HEMA practice, reenactment, or a collection built around the age of plate armor. If you're deciding between this and its relatives, the bastard sword sits at the one-handed end of the family and the greatsword at the two-handed extreme.
Both — that's the point. The longsword is a "hand-and-a-half" design: light enough to swing one-handed, with a grip long enough for the second hand when you need leverage. That versatility made it the dominant knightly sidearm of the 14th through 16th centuries.
Size and role. A longsword runs roughly 40 to 48 inches overall and works in one or both hands; a greatsword is a true two-hander, often 55 inches or more, carried on the shoulder rather than the belt and used to break pike formations. If it can't be worn at the hip, it's not a longsword.
Battle-ready. Each is forged from high-carbon steel with a full tang, tempered for flexibility, and can be sharpened to a working edge. They're built for cutting practice, reenactment, and HEMA-adjacent use — decorative pieces are labeled as such on their product pages.
