Custom Sword Maker: Design Your Own Hand-Forged Sword

Battling Blades runs one of the few true custom sword builders online: you choose the pattern, steel, length, fittings and engraving, and our smiths forge the blade to your order. This page explains how the process works and what you can build.

How the custom sword builder works

Open the custom sword builder and work through the choices: sword style (longsword, katana, Viking sword, gladius, rapier, greatsword, cutlass, scimitar, fantasy or ceremonial), blade steel, length, handle material and design, guard, pommel, scabbard, sharpening and engraving. Every combination is priced live as you build.

If the option lists don't cover the sword in your head, they don't have to: upload a picture, a drawing, or a written description at the end of the builder and we will quote the design directly. A large share of our custom work starts as a customer sketch.

The steel

Custom blades are forged to order in 1095 high carbon steel, which takes the hardest working edge, or pattern-welded Damascus steel, folded and forged so the layers show along the blade. Every Damascus and 1095 custom blade is hand forged. Full-tang construction, functional sharpening and custom scabbards are available across most patterns.

Engraving and personalization

Blades and scabbards can carry names, initials, dates, logos, symbols and custom artwork, engraved or UV printed depending on the material. Custom swords are a regular choice for groomsman gifts, retirements, awards and commemorations; the engraving step in the builder shows what each surface can take.

Beyond swords

The same made-to-order process covers custom knives, custom axes and custom spears, and the full made-to-order range lives in Create Your Own.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a custom sword take? Each blade is forged to order; build time depends on the pattern and options you choose, and the current estimate is shown at checkout.

Can you make a sword from my drawing? Yes. Upload a reference image or description in the builder and we will confirm the design and quote before forging.

Are custom swords functional or display? Your choice. Full-tang 1095 or Damascus builds with sharpening are functional blades; unsharpened and stainless builds suit display and ceremony.

What makes this different from buying off the shelf? An off-the-shelf sword is forged to our spec; a custom sword is forged to yours. If one of our existing swords is already close, customizing from that pattern is often faster.
