Crusader & Templar
The crusading orders left behind the most recognizable sword silhouette in history: the straight cruciform blade, plain guard and wheel pommel carried to the Holy Land from the 11th century onward. The Knights Templar made it an emblem as much as a weapon, and the type survives in effigies, manuscript art and the Oakeshott typology that modern collectors still use to classify it.

Choosing a crusader sword
Blade and type
Most crusader-era swords fall into the Oakeshott Type X through XII range: broad, evenly tapered cutting blades with a fuller running much of their length. Our Type XII arming sword follows that pattern closely, while the longer pieces scale the same lines up to a hand-and-a-half grip. Cross-shaped guards and wheel or brazil-nut pommels keep the period look.
Steel
Our Damascus and 1095 high carbon blades are hand forged and full tang. The ceremonial Oathkeeper is stainless steel, a lower-maintenance choice for display and presentation rather than cutting. Every listing states its steel, and high carbon blades want to be kept clean, dry and lightly oiled.

Frequently asked questions
What sword did crusaders actually use?
Primarily the one-handed arming sword with a cruciform hilt, in the Oakeshott Type X to XII range, alongside the great helm and kite or heater shield. Longer war swords appeared late in the crusading period.
What is a Templar sword?
The Knights Templar carried the same cruciform arming swords and war swords as other knights of the period. The order's symbolism, the red cross and the sergeant's black and white, is what sets Templar-styled pieces apart today.
Are these functional swords?
The Damascus and 1095 steel blades are hand forged, full tang and hardened. The stainless Oathkeeper is ceremonial. Swords ship unsharpened unless sharpening is selected at checkout.
Can a blade be engraved?
Yes. Blade and scabbard engraving and etching are done in our Illinois workshop, a common choice for presentation and commemoration pieces in this collection.
