Smokey White Katana, 1095 Steel, 41 inches

A full-size katana with a smokey white finish on a 1095 high carbon blade. The katana was the sword of the samurai from the 15th century on: a curved, single-edged blade over 24 inches, a round or square guard, and a grip long enough for two hands. This one is 41 inches overall, half an inch longer than our standard katana, with a wood scabbard to match the white fittings.

The blade

1095 is a plain high carbon steel with about 0.95 percent carbon, roughly double the carbon of the 1045 steel used in most production swords. It takes a very hard edge, typically 56 to 58 HRC, and holds it. On its own that hardness would make a long blade brittle, so the blade is clay tempered: the smith coats the spine in clay, leaves the edge bare, and quenches. The edge hardens fully and the spine stays softer and springier. That is the traditional Japanese method and it is what produces the hamon, the temper line along the edge.
