The blade is forged from 1095 high-carbon steel, renowned for its exceptional hardness and edge retention. Unlike 1045 steel (which contains only 0.45% carbon), 1095 steel boasts a 0.95% carbon content, making it significantly stronger and capable of maintaining a razor-sharp edge.
However, 1095 steel is naturally rigid, which can make it prone to breaking on high-impact collisions. To increase flexibility while preserving strength, this katana undergoes a clay tempering process:
- Clay is applied to the blade, leaving the edge exposed.
- During quenching, the uncovered edge cools rapidly, maintaining extreme hardness.
- The coated portion cools more slowly, resulting in a softer, more flexible spine.
This process creates a perfect balance of strength and flexibility, producing a durable, razor-sharp katana capable of withstanding intense use.
