Description

Some swords are made to be admired first. This 36" ornate broadsword surrounds the hand with a richly detailed leaf guard, rests in a leather sheath dressed with decorative metal fittings, and carries a blade hand-forged from 352-layer Damascus steel. Beneath all that ornament is the real thing: a sharpened, heat-treated blade whose flowing pattern is unique to this sword.

See every style in our broadsword collection, compare the cleaner lines of our 39" Damascus broadsword, or pair it with our Damascus leaf rapier for a matched display.

The Leaf Guard

The guard is the centerpiece of this sword. Leaf and foliage forms spread out from the blade and frame the grip, turning a practical part of the hilt into ornamental metalwork. Foliate designs like these have decorated fine swords, armor and metalwork for centuries, and they give this broadsword a presence no plain cross guard can match.

A Fancy Sheath to Match

The included leather sheath is finished with decorative metal fittings, so the sword looks complete whether it is displayed drawn or sheathed. [Fitting details, e.g. throat and chape finish.] It protects the sharpened edge in transport, but leather holds moisture, so store the oiled blade outside the sheath for the long term.

352-Layer Damascus Blade

An ornate hilt deserves a blade worth the attention. Each billet begins as 11 pieces of steel, five of 1095 and six of 15N20, forge-welded and folded five times: 22, 44, 88, 176 and finally 352 layers. 1095 supplies hardness and edge retention. 15N20 adds toughness, and its nickel content keeps its layers bright after etching, creating the contrast that makes the pattern visible. Because the two steels share similar carbon levels, they weld cleanly and harden evenly in one heat treatment.

Ornate, Not Ornamental

Plenty of decorative swords are wall hangers: a soft, unhardened blade under a showy hilt. This is not one of them. The blade is hand-forged, heat treated and sharpened, and the hilt is properly fitted before the sword ships from our Illinois warehouse. We call that battle ready as a construction standard: forged steel and real heat treatment, whatever the hilt looks like.

A Showpiece and a Gift

With its detailed guard and fitted sheath, this broadsword is made for a place of honor: above a mantel, in an office, or on a display stand in a collection. It is a memorable gift for a retirement, a graduation, a groomsman or a milestone birthday, and an impressive ceremonial sword for any occasion that calls for one.

Care

The Damascus blade is made from carbon steels, so it is not stainless. Wipe it after handling and keep a light coat of mineral oil or sword oil on it. Dust the leaf guard with a soft brush or cloth, since fine detail can collect dust and moisture, and wipe the sheath fittings with a dry cloth to keep them bright. Store the sword in a dry place. The edge is sharp, so wipe from spine to edge and keep the sword out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a decorative sword or a real sword?

Both. The hilt and sheath are highly decorative, but the blade is genuine hand-forged Damascus steel, heat treated and sharpened. It is a real sword with an ornate finish, not a wall hanger.

Is the blade sharpened?

Yes. It ships with a sharpened, double-edged blade and should be handled and stored accordingly. Sales are limited to adults 18 and over.

Does it come with a sheath?

Yes. A leather sheath with decorative metal fittings is included and designed to complement the leaf guard.

Does it make a good gift?

It is one of our most striking gift swords. The ornate guard and fitted sheath make it display-ready out of the box, and the Damascus pattern ensures no one else owns a blade exactly like it.

What makes the Damascus pattern unique?

The pattern is the visible edge of 352 folded layers of 1095 and 15N20 steel. Every billet folds and flows differently, so each blade's pattern is one of a kind.

Is Damascus steel stainless?

No. This Damascus is made from two carbon steels, so a quick wipe and a light coat of oil after handling keep it in excellent condition.
