Ninjato Sword- 1095 Steel- 30" Ninja Sword

Ninjato, 1095 Steel, 30 inches

A straight-bladed short sword with a square guard, the pattern known as the ninjato or ninja sword, in 1095 high carbon steel with a wood scabbard. At 30 inches it is shorter than a katana and carries no curve. The straight ninja sword is a 20th century design with no surviving period example; it is a genuine modern type, built here as a real sword with a full tang and a clay tempered blade.

The blade

1095 is a plain high carbon steel with about 0.95 percent carbon, roughly double the carbon of the 1045 steel used in most production blades. It takes a very hard edge, typically 56 to 58 HRC, and holds it. To keep a long blade from being brittle at that hardness it is clay tempered: the smith coats the spine in clay, leaves the edge bare, and quenches, so the edge hardens fully while the spine stays softer and springier. On the swords that is what produces the hamon, the temper line along the edge.
