Inspired by the blades trusted by the Marines, our Military Bowie Knife is a modern-day incarnation of the iconic design attributed to Arkansas blacksmith James Black in the early 19th century — the knife that made Jim Bowie a legend. This 20-inch version renders that legacy in copper Damascus: layered, forge-welded steel shot through with veins of genuine copper, so the blade gleams with bands of steel-gray and warm metallic gold that exist on no other knife.
"Bowie knife" is a term often used loosely for large hunting knives, but it properly describes a big sheath knife with a crossguard and a distinctive clip point — the concave, curved top edge that sweeps down to the tip. At a full 20 inches overall, this is a large Bowie by any standard: a commanding centerpiece for a collection that still carries the working geometry of the original.
Copper Damascus is made the same way as traditional pattern-welded steel — alternating layers forge-welded, folded, and etched — with one addition: layers of genuine copper worked in among the high-carbon steel. The etch reveals the contrast in flowing bands, with the copper catching the light in a way plain steel Damascus never does. The pattern runs through the full thickness of the blade, not just across its surface, and no two blades ever share it.
The blade arrives sharpened. The classic Bowie geometry is all here: the curved clip bevel toward the tip — which, kept sharp, excels at fine, controlled work like skinning — and the long straight edge near the guard that handles heavy cutting and slicing. A crossguard protects the hand in hard use.
Like all Battling Blades knives, the blade is thick, durable, and made to be handled. While it makes an exceptional hunting or display knife, it is not intended or sold for use as a weapon.
A fitted leather sheath is included, covering the sharpened edge for safe transport, storage, and display on the belt or the shelf.
Copper Damascus contains no stainless steel — both the carbon steel and the copper will react to moisture and skin oils if neglected. The routine is the same as any high-carbon blade: wipe it clean after handling, keep it dry, and protect it with a light coat of mineral oil before storage. Avoid abrasive polishes, which can flatten the etched pattern and dull the copper's luster. With basic care, the copper develops a warm, gradually deepening tone that collectors prize.
A Bowie knife is a large fixed-blade sheath knife defined by its crossguard and clip point — the scooped top edge that curves down to meet the tip. It's named for frontiersman Jim Bowie, whose famous knife (attributed to Arkansas blacksmith James Black) set the pattern in the 1830s and made the design an American icon.
Copper Damascus is pattern-welded steel with layers of genuine copper forged in among the high-carbon steel. When the blade is etched, the copper appears as warm metallic veins running through the gray steel pattern. It behaves like traditional Damascus in use and care, with a look that stands apart even among patterned blades.
Yes. The cutting edge and body of the blade are high-carbon steel hardened to 54–56 HRC; the copper rides within the layered structure rather than at the working edge. Treat it like any high-carbon knife — clean, dry, lightly oiled — and it will handle real cutting tasks. Many owners, though, buy this blade for exactly what it looks like on display.
It can, if neglected — carbon steel can rust and copper naturally darkens with exposure. A wipe-down after handling and a light coat of mineral oil before storage prevent rust entirely. Slow warming of the copper's tone over years is natural, and most collectors consider it part of the knife's character.
Twenty inches overall — firmly in large Bowie territory. Historical Bowie knives commonly ran 12 to 18 inches overall with blades from 6 to 12 inches; this model sits at the top of that tradition, sized to command attention in hand or on display.
