Ulfberht Sword – 46" Damascus Steel
The Ulfberht Sword stands as one of the most iconic and mysterious weapons of the Viking Age. Originally forged between the 9th and 11th centuries, authentic Ulfberhts were centuries ahead of their time, made from steel so pure that scholars still debate their origin. This modern recreation is designed directly from historical artifacts and forged in a historically accurate manner, ensuring that it captures not only the look but also the spirit of the originals.
Damascus Steel Blade
This 36-inch double-edged blade is hand-forged from 352 layers of Damascus steel, made by folding 1095 high carbon steel and 15N20 nickel steel. Each fold strengthens and refines the blade, combining hardness and edge retention with resilience and flexibility. The visible, rippling Damascus pattern mirrors the flowing watermarks seen on Viking-era blades, creating a one-of-a-kind surface on every sword.
The blade includes a long central fuller, a hallmark of Viking craftsmanship, reducing weight without sacrificing strength. Designed for both cutting and thrusting, the Ulfberht excels in versatility, just as its historical predecessors did on the battlefield.
Handle & Fittings
The hilt follows authentic Viking-era designs, with a short, straight guard and a lobed pommel — the distinctive counterweight that defined Ulfberht swords. The wooden grip is wrapped for secure handling, making the sword comfortable for both single-handed strikes and two-handed power.
Every element of the design has been guided by archaeological finds and preserved artifacts, ensuring a weapon that feels as close to an original Ulfberht as modern craftsmanship allows.
Historical Inspiration
Original Ulfberht swords were a sign of prestige and unmatched quality. With steel purer than most weapons of its age, these swords held near-mythical status, used by high-ranking warriors across Europe. Our recreation pays tribute to these rare blades, built in the same historically accurate style and with the same dedication to balance, weight, and proportion found in surviving museum pieces.
