Ulu Knife Details

Ulu knives have been found that date back to as early as 2500 BCE. It was believed the ulu contained ancestral knowledge and would also be passed on for generations. The size of the ulu typically reflects its usage. An ulu with a 5 cm (2 in) blade would be used as part of a sewing kit to cut sinew or for cutting out patterns from animal skins. An ulu with a 15 cm (6 in) blade would be used for general purposes. Occasionally, ulu can be found with blades as large as 30 cm (12 in). The ulu comes in four distinct styles, the Alaskan, Canadian, West Greenlandic and East Greenlandic. With the Inupiat style ulu, the blade has a center piece cut out and both ends of the blade fit into the handle. In Canada, the blade is attached to the handle by a single stem in the center. In the western areas of the Canadian Arctic the blade of the ulu tended to be of a triangular shape, while in the eastern Arctic the ends of the blade tended to be more pointed.

Blade Material

The knife is made from Pattern welded Damascus steel.  Pattern welded Damascus steel is a hard heat treated, folded carbon steel.  There are 11 pieces of steel, folded five times, making 352 layers. The steel is the perfect combination of hardness and durability with a Rockwell hardness rating between 55 and 56 HRC.  High carbon Damascus steel must contain layers of high carbon steel. The high carbon steel we use is 1095 steel which is the highest content carbon steel used in swords. The combination of the steel layers creates a sword that is strong enough to hold a powerful edge while having the strength and flexibility to withstand powerful collisions.  This makes the perfect steel for swords. The handle is bone and horn with Damascus steel bolsters. It comes with a leather sheath.
