What Is a Seax?
A seax is the single-edged knife of the early Germanic and Anglo-Saxon world, made in sizes from belt knife to short sword. The word itself is Old English for "knife," and archaeologists use it for the larger single-edged iron blades of the era.
Seaxes appeared in a wide range of sizes. Smaller examples served as practical knives, while larger forms, often called long seaxes, approached the size and presence of short swords. The blade was typically carried in a leather sheath and worn horizontally or at an angle along the belt.
One of the most famous surviving examples is the Seax of Beagnoth, a 10th-century Anglo-Saxon long seax held by the British Museum. Discovered in the River Thames, the original measures more than 28 inches and is decorated with intricate metal inlays and the complete Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet.
This Damascus steel seax is not a direct reproduction of the Seax of Beagnoth or any single archaeological artifact. It is a modern, historically inspired interpretation that combines the traditional broken-back form with patterned steel, carved wood and aged leather.
