A longsword scaled up for display, in 1095 high carbon steel, with a horse head worked into the guard and pommel. The longsword is the European knightly sword of the 14th and 15th centuries: cruciform hilt, straight double-edged blade, a grip long enough for two hands. This version is offered in the Giant Sword Series lengths for a hall, a shop or a set.

The blade

1095 is a plain high carbon steel with about 0.95 percent carbon, roughly double the carbon of the 1045 steel used in most production blades. It takes a very hard edge, typically 56 to 58 HRC, and holds it. To keep a long blade from being brittle at that hardness it is clay tempered: the smith coats the spine in clay, leaves the edge bare, and quenches, so the edge hardens fully while the spine stays softer and springier. On the swords that is what produces the hamon, the temper line along the edge.
