Longsword/ Greatsword- 1095 Steel Sword- Giant Sword Series

Longsword and Greatsword, 1095 Steel, Giant Sword Series

A plain longsword scaled from full size to display size, in 1095 high carbon steel, offered at 45, 55, 65 and 75 inches. The 45-inch is a usable two-hander; from 55 inches up it is a greatsword in scale and a wall piece in practice. Wood grip with Damascus steel bolsters, leather scabbard.

The blade

1095 is a plain high carbon steel with about 0.95 percent carbon, roughly double the carbon of the 1045 steel used in most production blades. It takes a very hard edge, typically 56 to 58 HRC, and holds it. To keep a long blade from being brittle at that hardness it is clay tempered: the smith coats the spine in clay, leaves the edge bare, and quenches, so the edge hardens fully while the spine stays softer and springier. On the swords that is what produces the hamon, the temper line along the edge.
