A 19-inch kopis in 1095 high carbon steel. The kopis is the forward-curving Greek blade, single-edged on the inside of the curve, carried by hoplites and cavalry alongside the straight xiphos. The weight sits toward the tip, which is what gave it its reputation as a cutter. Wood and brass grip, leather sheath.

The blade

1095 is a plain high carbon steel with about 0.95 percent carbon, roughly double the carbon of the 1045 steel used in most production blades. It takes a very hard edge, typically 56 to 58 HRC, and holds it. To keep a long blade from being brittle at that hardness it is clay tempered: the smith coats the spine in clay, leaves the edge bare, and quenches, so the edge hardens fully while the spine stays softer and springier. On the swords that is what produces the hamon, the temper line along the edge.
