Sword Description

The claymore sword is a Scottish or Gaelic sword popular from the 15th- 17th centuries.  There are two variants of the sword.  The first is a two-handed sword with an optional basket grip (also known as a basket hilt).  The basket grip if similar to the hilt of the rapier sword except it allows for two hands on the grip.  This sword is similar to the standard bastard sword or longsword used throughout Europe.  The second type of claymore has a forward sloping or v-shaped hilt.  The term “claymore” was originally used in Scotland in the 18th century to describe basket gripped swords.  In 1707, the Scottish and English armies banded together under the Acts of Union and the claymore sword was used as the Highland symbol of strength and prowess.  The sword continued to be used by the Scottish regiments until the 19th century.

Blade Materials

The claymore is made from pattern welded Damascus steel.  Pattern welded Damascus steel is a hard heat treated, folded carbon steel.  There are 11 pieces of steel, folded five times, making 352 layers.  The steel is the perfect combination of hardness and durability with a Rockwell hardness rating between 55 and 56 HRC.  High carbon Damascus steel must contain layers of high carbon steel.  The high carbon steel we use is 1095 steel which is the highest content carbon steel used in swords.  The combination of the steel layers creates a sword that is strong enough to hold a powerful edge while having the strength and flexibility to withstand powerful collisions.  This makes the perfect steel for swords with a Rockwell Hardness of 55-56 HRC.  The handle is wood with Damascus steel bolsters.  It comes with a leather sheath, and has 352 layers.
