A 42-inch katana with a black-finished 1095 high carbon blade, blue fittings and a metal scabbard. The katana was the sword of the samurai from the 15th century on: a curved, single-edged blade over 24 inches, a round or square guard, and a grip long enough for two hands. This is one of the longer katanas we make, an inch and a half over the standard.
1095 is a plain high carbon steel with about 0.95 percent carbon, roughly double the carbon of the 1045 steel used in most production blades. It takes a very hard edge, typically 56 to 58 HRC, and holds it. To keep a long blade from being brittle at that hardness it is clay tempered: the smith coats the spine in clay, leaves the edge bare, and quenches, so the edge hardens fully while the spine stays softer and springier. On the swords that is what produces the hamon, the temper line along the edge.
