Cavalry Backsword, Damascus Steel, 36 inches

A 36-inch backsword with a pattern-welded Damascus blade. A backsword is single-edged with a thick flat spine, the cavalry pattern that Britain and the German states carried from the 17th century into the Napoleonic wars. The leather-wrapped grip and simple guard follow the trooper's issue swords rather than the officer's dress patterns.

The blade

The billet starts as eleven pieces of steel: six of medium carbon steel (#43 and #40) and five of 1095 high carbon steel. It is forge-welded and folded five times, doubling each time, to finish at 352 layers. The 1095 gives the edge its hardness and the medium carbon layers give the blade its toughness, which is why the finished piece sits at 55 to 56 HRC rather than being ground from a single hard bar. The pattern is revealed by etching after polishing, and no two blades are alike.
