Build a custom katana online and watch it take shape as you choose. The Battling Blades Katana Builder is a live configurator with over 65 billion possible configurations: three blade steels, twenty tsuba designs, seven ito wrap colors in five materials, nine saya finishes, eight habaki metals, blade and sheath engraving in 35 lettering styles, and any length from 20 to 80 inches in half inch steps. Your price updates with every choice, a concept sketch redraws your exact sword as you build, and the finished specification goes straight to checkout. Custom builds start at $199.99.

How the Katana Builder Works

Start from a curated look like The Classic or Shogun's Reserve, or start from a blank blade. Work through each decision in order: steel, hamon, hi groove, edge, finish, tsuba, wrap, fittings, saya, habaki, engraving, and size. Every option shows a real product photo and its exact price, so there are no surprises at checkout. When your sword is right, add it to the cart, or copy a shareable build link that reopens your exact configuration for you, a spouse, or a gift giver.

Choose Your Blade Steel

Stainless steel is the display choice, holding its polish with minimal maintenance. 1095 high carbon steel is the traditional battle-ready spec, heat treated and available with a genuine hamon from differential hardening rather than an acid-etched imitation. Folded Damascus steel shows its layered grain down the full length of the blade, forged the same way as the Damascus throughout our catalog. Every steel is a full tang construction: one continuous piece of steel from tip to pommel, secured through the handle.

Every Detail Is Yours

Select from twenty tsuba guard designs in iron, brass, and enameled finishes. Wrap the handle in cotton, silk, suede, or leather ito in seven colors, over matching kashira and fittings. Lacquer the saya in gloss or matte black (included), six premium colors, or natural wood, and finish the blade in satin, mirror, or a full black coating. Blade engraving and saya etching add initials, a date, a name, or a sentence in your choice of 35 lettering styles, previewed live on the sketch before you buy. It is what makes this builder the standard for a custom engraved katana or a milestone gift.

Sized to You, Down to the Half Inch

Build a 27 inch wakizashi, our standard 40.5 inch katana, or a 55 inch odachi, all forged in batches and priced as stocked sizes. Or set any overall length from 20 to 80 inches in half inch increments, with the handle length adjustable independently at no extra charge. If your custom length lands exactly on a stocked size, the forge-to-order fee is waived automatically.

Forged, Not Assembled

Every custom katana is hand forged to order in the same workshops that produce our full catalog, then inspected at four quality checkpoints before it ships: forging, heat treat, assembly, and final inspection. There are no seconds and no rework bins. Read the full process in the Battling Blades Quality Standard.

Custom Katana Questions

How much does a custom katana cost? Builds start at $199.99 for a wakizashi and $249.99 for a full size katana. Most configured swords land between $400 and $800 depending on steel, fittings, and engraving, with every price shown live as you build.

Can I engrave a katana blade? Yes. The builder offers initials, dates, names, sentences, and logo engraving on the blade, plus etching on the saya, in 35 lettering styles with a live preview.

What is the best steel for a custom katana? 1095 high carbon steel for a traditional battle-ready build with a genuine hamon, folded Damascus for the visible layered grain, stainless for a low maintenance display sword.

Can I save my build or send it to someone? Yes. Copy build link saves your exact configuration in a URL you can bookmark, share, or drop a very unsubtle hint with.

What sizes can I order? Stocked sizes at 27, 40.5, and 55 inches, or any custom length from 20 to 80 inches in half inch steps.

Shipping times refer to carrier transit time after an item ships. They do not include production time, custom work, engraving, etching, or other preparation time before shipment.

In-stock items typically ship within 1 to 4 business days, though this can occasionally take longer during high-volume periods or for items requiring extra handling. Engraving or etching on in-stock items may add 1 to 3 business days before shipment.

Custom, engraved, altered, made-to-order, backordered, and specialty items (including armor and chess sets) may require additional production time before they ship. Fully custom items typically take 4 to 8 weeks, but complex requests may take longer depending on the design, materials, approvals, and production requirements.

Once an item ships, delivery time depends on the shipping method, carrier, and destination. If you need an item by a specific date, contact us before ordering so we can confirm whether the timeline is realistic.

In-stock items with no customizations can be returned free within 30 days, as long as they show no signs of use. Returns are handled through our return center.

Items that have any customization (such as engraving or etching) or that show signs of use cannot be returned. Custom and made-to-order items are produced specifically for your order and are not eligible for return.

If your item arrives damaged, incorrect, or defective, contact us with your order number and photos so we can review the issue.
