Katana- High Carbon 1095 Steel Sword- Black and White

Black and White Katana, 1095 Steel, 40.5 inches

A full-size katana in black and white: a black-fitted handle and a two-tone wood scabbard on a 1095 high carbon blade. The katana was the sword of the samurai from the 15th century on: a curved, single-edged blade over 24 inches, a round or square guard, and a grip long enough for two hands. This one is 40.5 inches overall with brass bolsters.

The blade

1095 is a plain high carbon steel with about 0.95 percent carbon, roughly double the carbon of the 1045 steel used in most production swords. It takes a very hard edge, typically 56 to 58 HRC, and holds it. To keep a long blade from being brittle at that hardness it is clay tempered: the smith coats the spine in clay, leaves the edge bare, and quenches, so the edge hardens fully while the spine stays softer and springier. That is the traditional Japanese method and it is what produces the hamon, the temper line along the edge.
