Medieval Bastard Sword – 42" | 1095 High Carbon Steel
The bastard sword, also called the hand-and-a-half sword, was the transitional weapon of late medieval Europe, bridging the gap between the one-handed knightly arming sword and the larger two-handed longsword. At 42 inches overall, this historically inspired reproduction captures the perfect balance of speed, reach, and versatility. Forged from 1095 high carbon steel, it is battle-ready, sharpened, and built with full tang construction for maximum strength.
Blade – 1095 High Carbon Steel
The 32-inch double-edged blade is hand-forged from 1095 high carbon steel, containing nearly 1% carbon for superior hardness and cutting ability. Heat-treated to 58–60 HRC, it holds a razor-sharp edge and withstands repeated use.
A central fuller runs down the length of the blade, reducing weight while reinforcing the structure — a feature found on authentic medieval swords. The result is a weapon that is both powerful and agile, capable of deadly cuts as well as precise thrusts.
Hilt & Construction
The sword features a straight crossguard in the traditional medieval style, offering hand protection in combat. A disc-shaped pommel serves both as a counterbalance for the blade and as a secondary striking surface. The leather-wrapped grip is long enough for one-handed use in conjunction with a shield, or for two-handed leverage in battle — the hallmark of the bastard sword.
Built with full tang construction, this sword is designed for strength and durability in both reenactment and cutting practice.
Scabbard
Each sword comes with a hand-etched wooden scabbard, crafted to protect the blade and add elegance to its presentation. The scabbard reflects traditional medieval styling, making it a fitting companion for both collectors and practitioners.
Historical Inspiration
The bastard sword gained popularity in the 14th and 15th centuries, when evolving armor and battlefield tactics required a weapon that could adapt to multiple fighting styles. Its name, “bastard,” reflects its hybrid nature — not entirely one-handed like the arming sword, yet not as large as the longsword. Knights and soldiers valued it for its reach, versatility, and balance, making it one of the most practical and enduring medieval weapons.
