Viking SpathaĀ Description

The Spatha is a double-bladed, longsword, used in the 1st-12th centuries C.E. They originated in Rome, developing from the shorter gladius. By the 7th century, spatha blades were no longer used in by the Romans, but they were rebranded to early versions of Viking swords from the 7th-10th centuries.Ā  The spatha further evolved during the 10th-12th centuries by the Normans, which saw a full cross guard and smaller pommel. Ultimately, the spatha evolved into a knightly sword in the 12th century. The Roman spatha was used in both war and gladiator fights. It was first used in the 1st century C.E. during the campaigns to Germany. Due to is success, it became the standard weapon for infantry, replacing the gladius. The spatha ranges from 19ā€-40ā€, with most versions being on the longer end. Due to is increased length, the spatha was more functional than the gladius due to its reach when thrusting. Infantry versions of the sword had a pointed tip while calvary versions had a rounded tip to prevent accidental stabbing of the horses.

Blade Materials

The sword is made from Pattern welded Damascus steel. Ā Pattern welded Damascus steel is a hard heat treated, folded carbon steel. Ā There are 11 pieces of steel, folded five times, making 352 layers. Ā The steel is the perfect combination of hardness and durability with a Rockwell hardness rating between 55 and 56 HRC. Ā High carbon damascus steel must contain layers of high carbon steel. Ā The high carbon steel we use is 1095 steel which is the highest content carbon steel used in swords. Ā The combination of the steel layers creates a sword that is strong enough to hold a powerful edge while having the strength and flexibility to withstand powerful collisions. Ā This makes the perfect steel for swords. Ā The handle is made of traditionally styled wood. Ā It comes with a leather sheath. Ā
