Gram – Norse Dragon-Slayer Damascus Sword
Gram is one of the great legendary swords of Norse heroic tradition. Best known as the sword of Sigurd, the dragon slayer, Gram appears in the Völsunga Saga and other northern legends as a weapon of destiny, kingship, vengeance, and supernatural power. In the saga, Sigurd uses Gram to slay the dragon Fafnir, one of the most famous dragon-slaying episodes in medieval literature.
The story of Gram begins before Sigurd himself. The sword was first connected to his father, Sigmund, after Odin placed a sword in the great tree Barnstokkr and declared that only the man able to draw it free would possess it. Sigmund pulled the sword from the tree, marking it as a divine weapon. After the sword was later broken, its fragments were reforged for Sigurd, becoming Gram, the dragon-slayer’s blade.
This 60-inch Gram – Norse Dragon-Slayer Damascus Sword features a long Damascus steel blade with a dark, patterned finish. Its large two-handed profile gives the sword the commanding presence expected of a legendary weapon, while the ornate brass-colored fittings and carved wooden grip create a powerful Norse heroic appearance suited to the mythic status of Gram.
The blade is made from high carbon Damascus steel with a 352-layer construction. It begins with 11 total steel pieces: 6 pieces of carbon steel #43 and #40, combined with 5 pieces of high carbon 1095 steel. The billet is forge-welded and folded repeatedly to build the layered structure of the blade.
Damascus Layer Construction
Starting Billet: 11 Steel Pieces
6 Pieces: Carbon Steel #43 and #40
5 Pieces: High Carbon 1095 Steel
1st Fold: 11 x 2 = 22 Layers
2nd Fold: 22 x 2 = 44 Layers
3rd Fold: 44 x 2 = 88 Layers
4th Fold: 88 x 2 = 176 Layers
5th Fold: 176 x 2 = 352 Layers
After forging, polishing, and etching, the Damascus layers reveal flowing patterns across the blade. These natural lines give each sword its own unique character, with visible waves, dark contrast, and forged detail throughout the steel. The layered Damascus pattern fits the legendary nature of Gram, a sword tied to divine power, dragon-slaying, and heroic destiny.
The handle features carved detailing with brass-colored guard and pommel elements, giving the sword a bold ceremonial look while still maintaining the forceful character of a great battlefield weapon.
