Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi Sword
Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi is one of the most important swords in Japanese legend. Also known as the “Grass-Cutting Sword,” Kusanagi is counted among the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan, along with the sacred mirror and jewel. In Japanese tradition, these treasures symbolize imperial legitimacy, divine authority, wisdom, courage, and power.
The legend of Kusanagi begins with the storm god Susanoo, who discovered the sword inside the tail of the great eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi. The sword was originally known as Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi, often translated as the “Heavenly Sword of Gathering Clouds.” It was later given to the sun goddess Amaterasu and became part of Japan’s sacred imperial regalia.
The sword received the name Kusanagi, meaning “grass-cutter,” through the story of the hero Yamato Takeru. According to legend, Yamato Takeru used the sword to cut through burning grass and turn the flames back against his enemies. From that story, Kusanagi became associated with survival, divine favor, warrior courage, and command over danger.
This 32-inch Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi Sword features a straight 1095 high carbon steel blade with a dark finish and sharply angled point. The straight blade gives the sword a direct, ancient profile distinct from the curved katana. Its compact length makes it fast and controlled in hand, while the dark blade and bright green wrap create a bold appearance worthy of one of Japan’s most famous legendary weapons.
The handle features a green cord wrap with a traditional diamond pattern for a secure grip and strong visual contrast. The Japanese sword guard and fittings complete the weapon’s focused design, giving the piece a clean, powerful look suitable for display, collection, or martial arts appreciation.
Because the original sacred treasure is not publicly displayed, the exact physical appearance of Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi is known through legend and tradition rather than confirmed modern measurements. This sword presents Kusanagi as a straight-bladed Japanese weapon, honoring the legendary form and symbolism of the Grass-Cutting Sword.

Custom, engraved, altered, made-to-order, backordered, and specialty items (including armor and chess sets) may require additional production time before they ship. Fully custom items typically take 4 to 8 weeks, but complex requests may take longer depending on the design, materials, approvals, and production requirements.
Once an item ships, delivery time depends on the shipping method, carrier, and destination. If you need an item by a specific date, contact us before ordering so we can confirm whether the timeline is realistic.
In-stock items with no customizations can be returned free within 30 days, as long as they show no signs of use. Returns are handled through our return center.
