The Mainz Gladius is a captivating re-creation of the cherished sword wielded by Roman foot soldiers. Derived from the Latin word for sword, 'gladius', this iconic blade holds a heroic narrative that courses through the veins of history, all the way back to the ancient Roman Empire. It was the quintessential companion of the Roman infantry, who initially unleashed javelins upon foes before descending into the heart of battle with their gladii drawn, harmoniously coordinated with shields.

Tracing back its lineage, the early iterations of the gladius bore a striking resemblance to the Greek xiphos sword. However, as the tides of the 3rd century B.C.E. rolled in, the Romans ingeniously integrated the designs of their Celtic Celtiberian and Spanish Hispania adversaries into the gladius, giving birth to the famed Hispaniensis Gladius, also known as the Spanish Xiphos. The morphing of designs didn't halt there; as the Romans marched through the territories of Hispania, their gladii embraced diverse versions, reflecting the essence of conquered lands.

As eras shifted, the gladius too morphed, eventually making way for the elongated spatha sword in the 3rd century C.E. Despite its evolution, every guise of the gladius was meticulously crafted for both slashing and piercing, with dimensions ranging between 18 to 33 inches, with most capping at a practical 25”, and a weight spectrum of 1.5 to 2.5 pounds. The allure of the gladius was not just in its balanced blade, but also in the varying aesthetics of guard, blade shape, and the intricate artwork adorning the handle and pommel.

Among the celebrated variations, the gladius Hispaniensis from Spain, Mainz Gladius from Germany, Fulham Gladius from Britain, and Pompeii Gladius from Rome are etched into the annals of history. This exquisite replica takes inspiration from the Mainz Gladius, bearing a legacy of courage, innovation, and unyielding strength.

18in Mainz Gladius Engraved Image/Name

The blade itself is a beautiful Mainz personal protection gladius; the kind a Roman would have kept on their private person attending town or their councils.

However, the engraving of the image is poor. It almost looks like no image at all which is quite unfortunate as it bears our family coat of arms from Venice Italy.

It would be good to specify if you have an issue engraving or etching any products and consult the customer. Thanks for the product.
