The Viking sword, also called the Carolingian sword, emerged in the 8th century as Frankish smiths refined the earlier Merovingian sword, itself descended from the Roman spatha. It spread through Western and Northern Europe to become the defining blade of the Viking Age: a single-handed sword with a broad fuller, short guard, and distinctive lobed pommel. By the 11th century the design was evolving into the Norman sword, the direct ancestor of the celebrated knightly arming swords.
