Tanto Knife – High Carbon Damascus Steel

A Blade of Strength, Precision & Tradition

The tanto is a traditional Japanese short sword that is often used as a knife due to its compact design. Known for its razor-sharp edge and reinforced tip, the tanto was originally designed for stabbing and piercing, though it is equally effective for slashing.

Tanto blades are unique in structure, often forged without a ridgeline, giving them a flat, nearly seamless surface unlike the curved design of a katana. Some tanto knives feature thicker cross-sections, known as yoroi toshi, which were specifically designed to pierce armor.

Historically, the tanto was a staple weapon of the samurai, carried as a backup blade in battle. Women also carried a smaller version, known as a kaiken, for self-defense. Before the widespread use of the wakizashi, samurai would traditionally pair their tachi sword with a tanto rather than a wakizashi and katana combination.

Premium Damascus Steel Blade

This tanto is crafted from Pattern-Welded Damascus Steel, a process that enhances strength, durability, and sharpness. Through a meticulous forging process, 11 pieces of steel are folded five times to create 352 layers, resulting in a razor-sharp, impact-resistant edge.

Blade Composition:

  • 6 Pieces of Carbon Steel (#43 and #40)
  • 5 Pieces of 1095 High Carbon Steel – The hardest and most durable high-carbon steel used in swords
  • Layering Process:
    • 1st Fold: 11Ɨ2 = 22 layers
    • 2nd Fold: 22Ɨ2 = 44 layers
    • 3rd Fold: 44Ɨ2 = 88 layers
    • 4th Fold: 88Ɨ2 = 176 layers
    • 5th Fold: 176Ɨ2 = 352 layers

This results in a Rockwell Hardness of 55-56 HRC, delivering a powerful yet flexible blade for superior cutting performance.
