Skinning Knife Description

The skinning knife, or a skinner, is a type of hunting knife that has a rounded point as to not damage the skin as it is being removed. The hunting knife is a knife used during hunting for preparing the game to be used as food.  These activities involve skinning the animal and cutting up the meat. Hunting knives are traditionally designed for cutting rather than stabbing, and usually have a single sharpened edge. The blade is slightly curved on most models, and some hunting knives may have a blade that has both a curved portion for skinning, and a straight portion for cutting slices of meat. Some blades incorporate a guthook. Most hunting knives designed as "skinners" have a rounded point as to not damage the skin as it is being removed.

This American style hunting knife is based on the Bowie knife.  The Bowie knife is a fixed-blade knife created by James Black in the early 19th century.  This was founded in Arkansas, USA in reference to the legendary Jim Bowie. The Bowie knife is used to describe a wide range of hunting knives, although in common usage the term refers to any large sheath knife with a crossguard and a clip point.  The knife pattern is still popular with collectors and hunters. Most modern versions of the Bowie knife a blade length between 6 and 12 inches, with a relatively broad blade with thick steel. The Bowie knife's design makes it the perfect hunting knife for skinning or butchering game. The curved top clip bevel of the blade, when suitably sharpened, may be used to remove the skin from a carcass, while the straight portion of the blade edge, toward the guard, can be used for cutting meat.  All Battling Blades Bowie knives are extremely high quality knives, with exceptionally thick steel. These knives are used for hunting or display and are not intended or sold for use as a weapon. Some hunting knives are adapted for other uses in the wild; such as a Camp knife, which hunters may use as machetes or hatchets when those specific tools are not available. In this case, their function is similar to a survival knife.

Blade Details

This knife is made from Pattern welded Damascus steel.  Pattern welded Damascus steel is a hard heat treated, folded carbon steel.  There are 11 pieces of steel, folded five times, making 352 layers. The steel is the perfect combination of hardness and durability with a Rockwell hardness rating between 55 and 56 HRC.  High carbon Damascus steel must contain layers of high carbon steel. The high carbon steel we use is 1095 steel which is the highest content carbon steel used in swords. The combination of the steel layers creates a sword that is strong enough to hold a powerful edge while having the strength and flexibility to withstand powerful collisions.  This makes the perfect steel for swords.

My first Damascus Skinner

I have made over 40 knives which I give to friends. I have some (so called Damascus) but these R the real thing!
I find the metal to be very strong and once sharpened, be very careful! The workmanship is superb in the true way they have been made for centuries by blade smiths of the Middle East, from the times if sabers to Damascus barreled rifles with long barrels so as to be long enough to touch ground from a camels back. Even used in WW 1 and even WW 2.
Those who see these blades go “pop eyed” with gleam in their eye.
I am 81 years old and only one eye and it not too good to polish as I used to but plan on ordering and making more because they are great blades.

It's a good looking blade and sharp and thanks for the handle pin holes

When I finish it I'll send a photo.
