Celtic Swords
Celtic Iron age swords became popular in the 8th century B.C.E., and date back to the 12th century B.C.E. In the early periods, these swords were work hardened so they were not much stronger than bronze swords but they were much easier and cheaper to produce. Over time, smiths discovered that he blades could be hardened by adding carbon. Various methods were introduced to distribute the carbon. Most famous was the pattern welded method used in this blade. During the 5th century B.C.E., bronze we nearly completely replaced by iron leading to the Celtic sword. There were two versions of this sword, a long and a short style, both with an anthropomorphic hilt. Ring shaped pommels became popular in the 2nd century and were generally 19”-23”. Some of the longest were up to 52”. This sword was the precursor for Greek xiphos and Roman gladius swords. This sword is 28".
Blade Material
This Celtic sword is made from Pattern welded Damascus steel. Pattern welded Damascus steel is a hard heat treated, folded carbon steel. There are 11 pieces of steel, folded five times, making 352 layers. The steel is the perfect combination of hardness and durability with a Rockwell hardness rating between 55 and 56 HRC. High carbon damascus steel must contain layers of high carbon steel. The high carbon steel we use is 1095 steel which is the highest content carbon steel used in swords. The combination of the steel layers creates a sword that is strong enough to hold a powerful edge while having the strength and flexibility to withstand powerful collisions. This makes the perfect steel for swords. The handle is wood with brass bolsters. It comes with a leather sheath.
