Tree of Life Shield

Tree of Life shield, also known as the Yggdrasil shield, a type of Viking shield, is made of 22 gauge steel with a natural steel center.  This shield is designed with a painted tree of life from the original Yggdrasil shield.  The edge is wrapped in leather and the back has a leather handle strap.

Viking Helmet

The Viking helmet, also known as the Gjermunbdu helmet, originates from the 10th century in central Norway.  This helmet has a round cap and the neck was protected with mail aventail (chainmail).  It has a spectacle guard around the nose and eyes forming a mask.  This design is similar to Vendel period helmets.  There are five types of Viking helmets that have been discovered but only the Gjermundbu was able to be reconstructed to see the entire design.  Archaeologists believe that Vikings may have only rarely used metal helmets.  Instead, the majority of their battle helmets were likely made of leather.  Helmets with metal horns may have been used for ceremonial purposes millennia earlier but there is no evidence that Vikings used horned helmets in battle at any point in history.  It has been suggested that horned helmets became associated with Viking helmets due to a 19th century opera.

Cleaning and Maintenance Kit

Complete sword and knife cleaning kit in traditional Japanese box.  The kit is originally made for Katana swords but can be used for all high carbon and Damascus steel blades.  The kit includes:

Mekugi-nuki

Uchiko ball

Sword oil

Cleaning cloth

Storage Box

How to Use the Kit

Mekugi-Nuki- Brass mallet: Unscrew the short pin on top of the Mekuginuki, then place the bigger end of the pin on top of the Mekugi and hammer gently. When the Menuki is partially removed, turn the pin and finish the job.  Mekugi (peg) removal tool. A brass hammer or wooden mallet and a punch can also be used.  We do not recommend that steel tools be used that could damage the blade.

Uchiko Ball- Finely ground stone powder (hazuya and jizuya) in a silk ball: The blade should first be wiped with the cleaning cloth to remove the old oil. Uchiko may then be applied in one of two ways. The most common method is to gently tap the Uchiko ball every few inches along the flat of the blade on one side and then the other. The more traditional method is to hold the blade vertically and tap the ball every few inches along the spine. The fine powder particles will be drawn to the blade while the heavier powder particles will fall past the blade. The powder should then removed from the blade with another cloth wiping over the spine from hilt to tip in one direction. Remember, you are simply removing the powder and excess oil at this point – you’re not polishing nor do you want to scratch the blade. Once the powder has been removed the blade may be inspected, and a new light coating of oil may be applied to the blade, using a soft clean cloth or tissue.

Sword Oil- Use the cleaning cloth to wipe a light coating of oil on the blade.

Worth the cost and the wait

Whenever I initially purchased this set I was really hesitant as to what I was receiving concerned I may have been scammed, this along with the wait had me constantly checking to see where it was. Thanks to the clear communication of the battling blades help center I was informed of the process of where my items were in the supply process and when I could expect them by. The pack I bought was far beyond what I had expected, high quality weapons from an incredible price, a good blade cleaning kit and a sturdy helmet I would say I got more than my moneys worth from this and definitely plan to shop from battling blades again.
