The backsword is a versatile weapon that spans various styles and classifications. Often seen as a type of broadsword or sabre, backswords can feature both curved, pointed blades or straight, blunt blades with basket hilts. The defining characteristic of all backswords is their single-edged blade. Initially favored by infantry for their ease and low cost of production, backswords gained prominence in the early 17th century as a secondary weapon for European cavalry. These early versions typically had a straight, slim blade with a blunted tip. By the 18th century, this style had become the standard. The diverse designs of backswords result in a range of weights and lengths.
