The Cutlass Sword: The Legacy of the Swashbuckler

A tale of tempest and torrent isn't complete without the resonating clash of cutlass against cutlass amidst the deafening roars of the sea. Embodying the spirit of swashbuckling adventurers of yore, the Cutlass Sword is a compact yet fierce companion of those who dare to venture where the map ends. With its sharp, robust blade, this sword resonates with the raw essence of the Age of Sail, carving a legacy of high-seas adventure and outlaw freedom.

Historical Voyage: Born in the crucible of naval combat, the Cutlass was the choice of sea marauders, the dread of merchants, and a symbol of swift, decisive action. Its broad, slightly curved blade etched stories of plunder and power in the golden annals of piracy. Its hilt, a solid cupped or basket-shaped guard, was the last sight of many a foe, a herald of doom amidst the unforgiving waves. Its intimidating aura could quell mutinies, command respect, and, with a mere flash of its blade, secure surrenders from trembling crews. The flat of the blade was as much a tool of persuasion, a stern reminder of the pirate’s code during interrogations.

Forged From Legends: The allure of the Cutlass isn't just in its history, but in the heart of steel from which it is forged. Crafted meticulously from Pattern Welded Damascus Steel, a visual and physical testament to superior swordsmanship. With 11 pieces of steel folded five times into 352 relentless layers, the blade’s intricate pattern tells a story of time-honored craftsmanship.

Nice for the price

I’m no expert, but I own a lot of swords. I bought this specifically to use in pirate photo shoots. I like my swords to be “real”, and I’m very happy with this purchase. The blade is very sharp with a point of balance about 5.5” from the guard. It ain’t pretty, but seems very serviceable. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

The blade has two fullers running along one side, and none on the other! I’ve never seen that in a sword before, but I can’t see why it would matter. The fullers are a bit wavy. I replaced the brass pommel nut with a stainless acorn type nut which definitely makes the sword look more “finished”. There are a few marks on the guard and even some on the blade. My least favorite thing is the sheath, which looks like a very cheap knife sheath. But like everything else on this sword, it’s perfectly serviceable. I may try my hand at making one myself.

And for all that, I still really like this sword. I have some very nice, very expensive swords in my collection. This ain’t that. But if you were expecting something approaching perfection, what are you doing looking at a $200 weapon? I expect I’ll do some cutting with it soon, and I fully expect it to shear through water bottles right alongside some of my other swords costing 2 or 4 times as much. And it’s gonna photograph beautifully, contrasting with the other curved cutlasses I’ll be using in these shoots.

Yeah, there are flaws. But for what I paid, I’m really satisfied.
