Odachi: The Majestic Japanese Greatsword
Step into the historical realms of feudal Japan with the Nodachi, a legendary sword that represents both the might and artistry of the samurai warriors.
Historical Context
- Meaning & Size: The term "Nodachi" translates to "great sword". It boasts an impressive blade length of at least 35.8 inches (90.9 cm), though the specific size can sometimes vary based on definitions.
- Origins & Usage: The 14th-century Nanboku-chō period witnessed a surge in the popularity of these magnificent swords, likely because of advancements in swordsmithing. Given its size, it was traditionally worn on the back or carried by attendants, rather than the waist like other swords.
- Transition: With the emergence of firearms, the nodachi gracefully stepped back, making way for its shorter counterpart, the katana.
Blade Specifications
- Material & Hardness: Forged from the renowned 1095 steel, known for its high carbon content (.95%), the blade promises impeccable sharpness and durability. It outshines other variants like the 1045 steel, which contains a mere .45% carbon. The blade typically exhibits a hardness of 56-58 HRC.
- Tempering for Flexibility: While 1095 steel is incredibly hard, it can lack flexibility. To counteract this, the sword undergoes a tempering process. Clay is meticulously applied to parts of the blade, excluding the edge, which allows for differential cooling during quenching. This ensures the blade maintains its razor-sharp edge while the spine gains the required flexibility.
Detailed Specifications
- Total Length: An impressive 62".
- Sheath: A traditional wood sheath, preserving the blade's integrity.
- Handle: Crafted from wood, ensuring a firm grip.
- Tang: Full tang construction, providing stability and balance.
Nodachi Sword: A harmonious blend of history, craftsmanship, and martial artistry, this 64" Nodachi Sword, crafted from High Carbon 1095 Steel, is not just a weapon, but a testament to the grandeur of the samurai era. It's a longer, grander variant of the Katana, resonating with tales of valor from feudal Japan.
Shipping times refer to carrier transit time after an item ships. They do not include production time, custom work, engraving, etching, or other preparation time before shipment.
In-stock items typically ship within 1 to 4 business days, though this can occasionally take longer during high-volume periods or for items requiring extra handling. Engraving or etching on in-stock items may add 1 to 3 business days before shipment.
Custom, engraved, altered, made-to-order, backordered, and specialty items (including armor and chess sets) may require additional production time before they ship. Fully custom items typically take 4 to 8 weeks, but complex requests may take longer depending on the design, materials, approvals, and production requirements.
Once an item ships, delivery time depends on the shipping method, carrier, and destination. If you need an item by a specific date, contact us before ordering so we can confirm whether the timeline is realistic.
In-stock items with no customizations can be returned free within 30 days, as long as they show no signs of use. Returns are handled through our return center.
