A 17-inch Bowie in 1095 high carbon steel, boxed for gifting, with a plastic grip made for wet work. The Bowie is the American frontier knife of the 1830s: a broad clip-point blade with a crossguard, big enough to clear brush and fine enough at the tip to skin game. This one ships in a gift box with a leather sheath.

The blade

1095 is a plain high carbon steel with about 0.95 percent carbon, roughly double the carbon of the 1045 steel used in most production blades. It takes a very hard edge, typically 56 to 58 HRC, holds it through hard work, and sharpens back easily. It is not stainless: wipe it after use and keep a light coat of oil on it.
