Chess Origins
Chess originated in northwest India, where its early form in the 6th century was known as chaturaṅga, meaning four divisions. This included the infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariotry, which evolved into the modern pawn, knight, bishop, and rook. The gmae spread eastward and westward along the Silk Road reaching Western Europe and Russia by the 9th century. By the year 1000, it had spread throughout both Muslim Iberia and Latin Europe. Chaturaṅga was taken up by the Muslim world after the conquest of Persia where it was renamed. The word "checkmate" is derived from the Persian shāh māt meaning "the king is helpless". Around 1200, the rules of shatranj started to be modified in southern Europe, and around 1475, several major changes made the game essentially as it is known today.
