Gauntlets

A gauntlet is a type of glove constructed of hardened leather or metal plates which protected the hand and wrist.  It was primarily worn by a combatant in Europe between the early fourteenth and nineteenth centuries. Beginning in the eleventh century, European soldiers and knights relied on chain mail for protection.  In the twelfth century, chain mail shirts with longer, narrower sleeves replaced the original design, many of which had chain mail mittens.  These attached at the lower edge of the sleeve, protected the wearer's hands from cuts and lacerations during combat.  Unfortunately, these did not protect against crushing blows. In the early fourteenth century, armorers began to design fully articulated plate armor: which protected the body from blows.  From this, the development of hand protection in the form of gauntlets made of overlapping plates of steel was developed.  These were created both in the fingerless "mitten" style as well as the fully fingered "glove" style (which though still ungainly and less comfortable in cold weather, permitted full use of all of the fingers). This gauntlet is made from 20 gauge steel.

Knight Helmet

The Great Helm helmet, also known and the crusader helmet, pot helm, bucket helm or barrel helm, is a helmet used by knights during the high middle ages.  During the crusades, the helmet rose in popularity due to its extensive protective covering and lifting face mask.  This allowed crusaders to wear the helmet in and out of battle with greater comfort, increasing protection through dangerous regions in their journey.  The barreled style of the great helm was used by knights during the 13th and 14th centuries.  This design evolved into the frog-mouth helm used in jousting competitions.  This helmet is made of mild 20-gauge steel.

Knight Shield

The Knights Templar shield was the shield style used during the crusades.  The shields of the crusaders were generally triangular shape, with some variation. The most popular and recognized style was the kite shaped shield.  Most crusaders preferred the kite shaped shield over the traditional flat top shield.  The enarmes were straps used to hold the shield in the left hand while in use. The left forearm was thrust through two straps, and the hand gripped the third smaller strap for more control.  This shield is made of 20 gauge steel and is in the traditional style.  It measures 22” wide and 24” tall.

Cleaning and Maintenance Kit

Complete sword and knife cleaning kit in traditional Japanese box.  The kit is originally made for Katana swords but can be used for all high carbon and Damascus steel blades.  The kit includes:

Mekugi-nuki

Uchiko ball

Sword oil

Cleaning cloth

Storage Box

How to Use the Kit

Mekugi-Nuki- Brass mallet: Unscrew the short pin on top of the Mekuginuki, then place the bigger end of the pin on top of the Mekugi and hammer gently. When the Menuki is partially removed, turn the pin and finish the job.  Mekugi (peg) removal tool. A brass hammer or wooden mallet and a punch can also be used.  We do not recommend that steel tools be used that could damage the blade.

Uchiko Ball- Finely ground stone powder (hazuya and jizuya) in a silk ball: The blade should first be wiped with the cleaning cloth to remove the old oil. Uchiko may then be applied in one of two ways. The most common method is to gently tap the Uchiko ball every few inches along the flat of the blade on one side and then the other. The more traditional method is to hold the blade vertically and tap the ball every few inches along the spine. The fine powder particles will be drawn to the blade while the heavier powder particles will fall past the blade. The powder should then removed from the blade with another cloth wiping over the spine from hilt to tip in one direction. Remember, you are simply removing the powder and excess oil at this point – you’re not polishing nor do you want to scratch the blade. Once the powder has been removed the blade may be inspected, and a new light coating of oil may be applied to the blade, using a soft clean cloth or tissue.

Sword Oil- Use the cleaning cloth to wipe a light coating of oil on the blade.
