Embrace the spirit of the Samurai with our expertly crafted Katana Sword. A quintessential weapon of the Samurai from ancient and feudal Japan, the Katana is instantly recognizable with its distinctive curved, single-edged blade, circular or squared guard, and an extended two-handed grip. Celebrated as one of the finest cutting weapons in world military history by Western historians, the Katana designates a sword longer than 24". Our extra-wide version measures 39" in length, showcasing a square tsuba and a blade made from superior 1095 steel.
Blade Construction
Our Katana is painstakingly crafted from 1095 steel, recognized as the highest carbon steel typically used in sword-making. Boasting a carbon level of .95%, this steel far surpasses the .45% carbon content commonly found in 1045 steel swords. Renowned for its ability to retain a sharp edge, 1095 steel is incredibly hard, yielding a hardness of 56-58 HRC. While 1095 steel is naturally less flexible, which is a crucial property in sword-making to prevent breakage during high-impact collisions, we have expertly addressed this concern.
To enhance the steel's flexibility, we employ clay tempering, a traditional process of softening the steel. The process involves applying clay thickly to the blade parts that need to be softened, thus allowing them to cool slower during the quenching process. For this Katana, clay is applied everywhere except the edge, maintaining the blade's sharpness while enhancing the rest of the blade's flexibility. This meticulous process results in a blade that optimally balances strength and sharpness, ensuring an incredibly robust blade and a razor-sharp edge.
