Ulu Knife – Damascus Steel Skinning & Hunting Knife
A Time-Honored Tool of Tradition & Functionality
The ulu knife has a rich history dating back to 2500 BCE, traditionally used by Indigenous Arctic communities for hunting, food preparation, and sewing. These knives were considered sacred, often passed down through generations as they carried ancestral knowledge and tradition.
The size of the ulu determines its function:
- 2" blade – Used in sewing kits to cut sinew or shape animal hides.
- 6" blade – A versatile tool for general tasks such as skinning, food preparation, and slicing.
- 12" blade – Larger versions were occasionally used for butchering and heavy-duty cutting.
There are four primary styles of ulu knives:
- Alaskan – Traditional center-mount handle.
- Canadian – A single-stemmed handle.
- West Greenlandic – Triangular blade shape.
- East Greenlandic – More pointed blade ends.
This 5-inch Ulu knife follows the traditional Inupiat style, where the blade has a center cutout and both ends fit into the handle, allowing for superior balance and control.
