Viking Sword Description

The Viking sword (also known as the Viking age sword) or Ulfberht is the type of sword prevalent in Western and Northern Europe during the Early Middle Ages.  The type of Viking sword was made famous in the Stiklestad battle. The Viking sword developed in the 8th century from the Merovingian sword and was the primary sword used by the Scandinavian based Viking people.  The sword was derived from the Roman Gladius sword.  It is a single handed sword with a sharp tip and edges designed for slashing as well as thrusting. Viking swords remained popular until the 12th century where they blended into Norman swords which were the first stages of the knightly sword.

Blade Materials

The sword is made from Pattern welded Damascus steel.  Pattern welded Damascus steel is a hard heat treated, folded carbon steel.  There are 11 pieces of steel, folded five times, making 352 layers.  The steel is the perfect combination of hardness and durability with a Rockwell hardness rating between 55 and 56 HRC.  High carbon damascus steel must contain layers of high carbon steel.  The high carbon steel we use is 1095 steel which is the highest content carbon steel used in swords.  The combination of the steel layers creates a sword that is strong enough to hold a powerful edge while having the strength and flexibility to withstand powerful collisions.  This makes the perfect steel for swords.  The handle is wood wrapped in leather with Damascus steel bolsters.  It comes with a leather sheath.

This is a well built sword for a good price. The blade is beautiful and the balance is good. This is my first viking sword and I'm very pleased with my purchase. I've also bought the viking axe which is another nice buy. I will be back for more. Skol!

Ulfberht Stiklestad

Unbelievable craftsmanship. The damascus patterning is incredible. Blade is straight and plumb, Balanced and sharp enough to pillage and plunder if you dared. My family has strong ties to scandinavia and this makes us proud to have on display. Thanks to everyone at Battling Blades for a great tool and hopefully an heirloom for our future ancestors!

Very Satisfied

I received my sword yesterday and couldn’t be more pleased. The sword is exactly as described and is a beautiful work of art. The forge welded Damascus blade is stunning. The sword arrived well oiled and sharp, the blade seems to exhibit an adequate amount of flex and resilience. In my opinion the workmanship far exceeds the price of the sword. The included scabbard is well made but not historically correct but that can be replaced if needed. From the time of order until receipt was actually slightly shorter than what I expected. Brian was both courteous and prompt in his replies to my emails. Definitely two thumbs up for both this purchase and Battling Blades.
