When completed, this sword more closely resembled a thrusting polearm (a spear-like weapon such as the Svärdstav) than a longsword. In fact, solders carrying the sword fought in a pike formation, commonly used with polearms. The Zweihänder weighed more than 4.5 pounds and were a minimum of 4.5 feet long. Some longer Zweihänder, primarily used for ceremonial purposes, were up to ten pounds and seven feet long. Due to its size, the Zweihänder was worn around the shoulder rather than in a sheath. These swords were intended for two-handed use, but were lacking a point, rendering them ineffective in battle. They tended to be shorter in length, 31-35 inches, but could measure as long as 55” for more decorative and high profile executions. This sword is 49” in length and is modeled after a famous French guillotine sword. The quillons were short, and mainly straight, and the pommel was often pear-shaped or faceted. In the Middle Ages, decapitations were executed with regular swords. This was not always successful, propelling the development of the executioner’s sword. The earliest known specifically designed executioner's sword dates to 1540. The sword was in wide use in 17th-century Europe, but abruptly fell out of style in the early 18th century. The last executions by sword in Europe were carried out in Switzerland in 1867 and 1868, when Niklaus Emmenegger in Lucerne and Héli Freymond in Moudon were beheaded for murder. When no longer used for executions, an executioner's sword continued to be used as a ceremonial sword of justice, a symbol of judicial power.

Blade Materials

The sword is made from 1095 steel. 1095 steel is the highest carbon steel commonly used in swords. It has a carbon level of .95% which is one of the highest carbon levels for any type of steel. The most common high carbon swords are 1045 steel which only have .45% carbon content in the steel. 1095 steel is known for its ability to maintain an edge and is an incredibly hard steel. 1095 steel typically has a hardness of 56-58 HRC. The problem with 1095 steel is that it is lacks flexibility. Flexibility is critical to sword making so the sword doesn't break on high impact collisions. To increase the flexibility of this steel, clay tempering is used to soften the steel. The clay is thickly painted on the blade to insulates the parts of the blade that we want softened so they cool more slowly during the quenching process. In this case, the clay is painted everywhere except the edge. This clay tempering process keeps the strong and sharp edge of the blade while allowing the rest of the blade to be more flexible. This process optimizes the strength of the blade and maximizes its sharpness creating an incredible strong blade and sharp edge.

Sword Details

Handle Material: Wood

Overall Length: 60", 80", 100", 120", 140", 160"

Rockwell Hardness: 56-58 HRC

Sheath: Leather sheath

Blade Material: 1095 Steel

*Made to order. Its evolution marked the zenith of the Middle Ages' trend towards ever-larger swords. This colossal blade echoed the designs of thrusting polearms like the Svärdstav, leading soldiers to adopt pike formations, traditionally reserved for polearm combat. Tipping the scales at over 4.5 pounds and stretching beyond 4.5 feet, the Zweihänder sometimes even reached a staggering ten pounds and seven feet, especially for ceremonial variations. Its sheer size necessitated it to be slung over the shoulder instead of being sheathed. Mastery in wielding it earned soldiers the coveted title "Meister des langen Schwertes" or "Master of the Long Sword." Although its popularity waned by the late 16th century, ceremonial use persisted into the 17th.

Blade Construction

Fashioned from Pattern welded Damascus steel, the Zweihänder boasts strength and elegance. Its straight, double-edged blade arrives sharpened and features a reinforced central ridge for strength and controlled weight distribution. An acid etch reveals the contrast between the steels as rippling bands of light and dark — the signature "flowing water" pattern that runs through the full thickness of the blade, not merely across its surface.

The result is more than decoration. The layered construction is built on high-carbon steel, heat-treated to 56–58 HRC on the Rockwell scale — hard enough to take and hold a sharpened edge, with the resilience a full-length two-handed blade demands. Like all carbon-steel Damascus, the blade is not stainless: it rewards the same simple care routine as our 1095 swords, and in return its pattern deepens in character over years of ownership.

Prefer the plain, purposeful look of traditional carbon steel? On the historical originals, those hooks caught and deflected opposing weapons and let the wielder safely grip the blade above the guard for tighter, halberd-like control — and they give the sword its unmistakable silhouette in a collection.

Historical Significance: The Zweihänder in Battle

The Zweihänder, meaning "two-hander" in German, emerged during the late 15th and 16th centuries as a counter to polearms and densely packed infantry formations. Often wielded by Doppelsöldners — mercenaries who received double pay for their daring role at the front lines — these swords could break pike formations, cut through halberd shafts, and clear a path for advancing troops.

Due to their size, Zweihänders were rarely used in traditional sword-to-sword duels but were devastating in open battle and ceremonial displays of martial prowess. The name honors the legendary watered blades historically traded through Damascus. Today's Damascus is prized for combining the performance of high-carbon steel with a pattern that makes every blade one of a kind.

Is Damascus steel good for swords?

Yes — with one clarification. A Damascus blade is only as good as the steels inside it and the heat treatment behind it. This sword's layered high-carbon construction is hardened and tempered to 56–58 HRC, the same performance target as our 1095 blades, so the pattern comes as a bonus on top of a properly made sword rather than instead of one.

Is Damascus steel stronger than regular steel?

Not inherently — the folding process doesn't add magical strength, whatever the legends say. Strength comes from the quality of the component steels and the heat treatment. What Damascus does add is a blade that is visually unique, with performance equal to a well-made mono-steel sword of the same hardness.

Does Damascus steel rust?

Yes. Damascus is carbon steel, not stainless, so it will rust if neglected — and rust can obscure the pattern. A wipe-down after handling and a light coat of oil before storage are all it takes to prevent it.

How can I tell real Damascus steel?

Genuine pattern-welded Damascus carries its pattern through the entire thickness of the steel — visible on the spine and edge bevels, not just the flats. Fakes are typically laser-etched or acid-printed onto ordinary mono-steel, and their surface-only pattern polishes or wears away. This blade is forge-welded, and its pattern is in the steel itself.

Is this sword sharpened?

Yes. The blade ships with a sharpened, double-edged cutting edge backed by a full heat treatment. Handle it with the respect a 54-inch sharpened blade deserves, and use the included wood sheath for transport.

How long is a Zweihänder?

Historical battlefield Zweihänders commonly ran from roughly 55 to 70 inches overall, with ceremonial parade swords growing even larger. At 54 inches, this model sits at the compact end of the historical range — true two-handed presence, in proportions that are far more practical to display and handle.

How much does a Zweihänder weigh?

Far less than the myths claim. Historical battlefield Zweihänders typically weighed between about 4.5 and 7 pounds — big, but built to be used. Ceremonial examples could exceed 10 pounds. At approximately 4.5 pounds, this model sits right at the agile end of the historical battlefield range — a true two-hander that still moves.

What were the parrying hooks for?

The Parierhaken — the forward-swept hooks above the ricasso — served as a second guard. They could catch or deflect an opponent's weapon, and they protected the wielder's hand when gripping the unsharpened ricasso above the main guard for tighter, leveraged control in close quarters.

Is a Zweihänder the same as a greatsword?

A Zweihänder is a specific type of greatsword — the German two-hander of the 16th century, distinguished by its great length, extended grip, and parrying hooks. "Greatsword" is the broader family that also includes weapons like the Scottish two-handed claymore and the Iberian montante.

Who used the Zweihänder?

Most famously the Landsknechts, German mercenary companies of the 16th century. Soldiers skilled enough to wield the Zweihänder in the front line — often against pike formations — were called Doppelsöldner, "double-pay men," because their dangerous role earned exactly that.

What historical period inspired this sword?

The design draws from German two-handed swords of the late 15th and 16th centuries, the golden age of the Landsknecht.
